The immortal charm of "The Compleat Angler" has ensured its place in literary history. Only the Bible and the works of Shakespeare have been reprinted more often. Written by Sir Izaak Walton in 1653 it concerns the efforts of an experienced fisherman as he imparts his wisdom to a novice, eager to learn. The delightful way in which the lore of the river is conveyed has made it as popular with lovers of literacy as it has with anglers keen to gain insight from the lifetimes experience of a true master. Now, two avid fisherman with a sense of history retrace the journey of the book on this wonderful DVD and explore the locations, the fish and the methods that Sir Izaak so beautifully describes. Our two modern day anglers are both hugely experienced with contrasting characters. Geoffrey Palmer is without doubt one of Britain's most successful and best loved actors. His dry wit and endearing long suffering charm are complimented by the encyclopaedic knowledge of rough diamond Rae Borras. An East End boy made good Rae turned his back on a promising career in the 60's for the more reliable world of the building industry. Together they explore what remains of the world of Sir Izaak Walton. They visit some of his favourite haunts and try methods that he would have used 350 years ago. Although both highly skilled and competent anglers the series proves a challenge as they endeavour to learn techniques that are very different to those practised by todays anglers. As the pair catch some of Britain's classic fish they compare the locations today with how they would have been in the time of Sir Izaak. Although much has changed we also discover some universal truths of angling.
