LURES - Introduction

Welcome to our guide to fishing lures. The lure is artificial bait that comes in many forms, with a massive array of colours and patterns.

This can be quite off putting especially for the beginner. So the first step would be to look at the fish you are targeting, and chose a lure that mimics there natural prey.

Then try out other lures as your experience and knowledge grow. Lures can be broken down into several categories, and we will go through each one.

SPOONS Spoons are the simplest out of all the lures and get there name from looking like the head of a spoon that you and I would use to eat with. Though in modern times shapes do very but the principle still stays the same. They represent the bait fish with there wobbling and flickering action. A good tip is to very the time in which you start your retrieve, the later you leave it the deeper it will be retrieved at thus you will cover all depths and get maximum results. Spoons are great for getting started in lure fishing, as they are easy to use and don’t break the bank.

SPINNERS The spinner is a blade that rotates round on a spindle when retrieved through the water. Flashing as the light is reflected on the revolving blade. Again representing the bait fish as the light gets reflected from its scaly sides as it darts through the water. This is also a very versatile lure, and not only can you determine the retrieve depth by the length of time you leave before you start your retrieve. You can also change the rate at which the blade revolves around the spindle, by slowing or speeding up your retrieve. Use the smaller sizes for species such as Trout and Mullet. With the pike liking the larger spinner, with the treble hook dressed in red wool. A good selection of spinners is a must for all lure anglers.

SURFACE LURES As the title suggests these are lures that are used on the surface and the most explosive of all the lures as the fish can be seen taking the lure, the anticipation of a take is simply electrifying. Fish will even be seen completely leaving the water when they lunch themselves at a surface lures. Because of being retrieved on the waters surface make a good option for weeded areas as snagging is less likely. Give this method a go you will not be disappointed.

FLOATING DIVERS loating diver plugs come in a vast array of shape, size and colour. A must have for all lure anglers as they cover a wide range in diving depths, from just under the surface to fifteen foot and more. The diving depth that the lure will dive to is determined on the angle of the vane to the lures body. The lesser the angle to the lures body the deeper it will dive. The size and shape of the vane and body of the lure gives the plug its movement in the water. With the narrow streamlined plug having less movement than the chubby one. So make shore you have a good selection so you can cover all the angles.

SUSPENDING PLUGS Suspending plugs have neutral buoyancy. So when the plug has dived to the depth required and then left it will suspend there at that depth. This makes this type of lure great for stalking your quarry near water features like rocks, weed beds and banks. Then tweaked to give life to the plug can cause some crashing lunge from your target fish. Again with many shapes, sizes and colours a selection of these is essential.

SINKING PLUGS Sinking plugs are great for fishing in deeper water. So the retrieve can start once the desired depth has been reached. This is done by counting down before you start retrieving the lure, therefore the same depth can be achieved each time you cast. These diving or countdown plugs as they are also called will all have a sink rate. This is the distance the lure has sunk in a certain time, and can give you an idea of how deep the fish are when they strike. This makes this another great selection for your lure box.

JERK BAITS This type of lure has no movement of its own in the water. The life of this lure is given to it by the angler. Threw the jerking of the rod life is given to this form of lure, and thus giving it its name. The jerk baits come in both sinking and floating form. This type of lure mainly represents injured fish that the fish find irresistible, and compelled to lunge at. Because of the action needed to put life into the lure. This type of lure fishing is more suited for use with the bait casting or spin casting rod and reel set up, and using braid for the reel line gives you more direct contact for putting life into those lures. Then with a selection of lures you will be ready for those lunging lunkers.

SOFT BAITS This form of soft rubber bait comes in many shapes and forms, with sizes and colours to match. Soft baits are widely used in both sea and fresh water fishing. They can be used on a weighted jig head and used in the same fashion as the jerk bait, used in a similar fashion to a plug. Then on a long flowing trace and drifted in the flow or current or simply trawled behind a boat. There are many ways to use this type of lure, and will make for an exciting days fishing. So get yourself a selection and give it a go you won’t be disappointed.

So what ever your quarry fishing with a lure is both interesting and exciting weather new or pro, and will make for a great days fishing. Please select from a wide range of fishing lures from our online shop.
