THE CONGER EEL - Conger conger

The conger eel and there is no mistaking this spices can be found all round the British coastline but is more predominant along the south and west coast of our country. Which gives the conger its habitat of rocks; reefs and wrecks were it likes to hold up.

These marks also attract many other fish spices which are the food source of this giant. Fish, crabs and squid are all apart of the conger eel’s staple diet, but they are not fussy eaters and can be opportunists. They are often hauled up in lobster pots were they have been robbing the pot bait to the annoyance of the fishermen.

There spawning is similar to that of the fresh water eel. The eels stop feeding and migrate on a long journey to the Sargasso Sea, were here in depths of up to four thousand meters the female lays six million or more eggs and then dies.

The eggs then hatch and the leaf shaped elvers drift in the surface layers and carried by the currents to inshore waters. Here they grow and take on the shape of the parents until there turn to spawn.
