Welcome to our guide to coarse fishing tackle. Coarse fishing is the fishing on fresh water. Weather it is on a fast moving river, or to the still waters of a scenic lake, and with many different species to target, all hold great challenge for the angler. There are many methods used under the headings ledger, pole and float to capture them. So weather a specimen hunter targeting specific species like carp and pike, which we will look at under their own headings.

To the match and pleasure angler but all in pursuit of the coarse fish. For float fishing a match rod or pole is used. The match rod normally being between twelve and fourteen feet in length. Were as the pole can be from a three meter whip to a thirteen meter pole. Then a small match reel to go with the match rod,as the pole does not have a reel but elastic running up through the top three sections of it.

The elastic is then connected to the rig, which is set for the situation that you are fishing. As for the match reel this is loaded up with 2lb to 6lb monofilament. Then the float and there are hundreds of variations, colours and weights to suit all aspects. Then we balance the float with split shot. These are a small weight with a split in the side thus the name, these are then pinched onto the line under the float in verius positions.

This will make the float stand up in the water with just the tip of the float protruding above the surface, thus acting as a bite indecater and letting the angler know what is going on under the surface.

Ledgering is fishing on the bottom of the lake or river a feeder or quiver rod is used the quiver is about nine to ten feet in length with different strength brightly coloured push in tips that quiver when a fish bites acting as a bite indecater and letting you know what is happening around your bait thus giving the quiver rod its name.

The feeder rod normally about ten to twelve feet in length and of a stiffer action is used for heavier fishing and can also have differant weight inter changable tips macking them more versatile for the modern angler.

The reel used for ledgering is in between a match reel and carp reel in size, holding 4lb to 8lb breaking strain monofilament. For the business end a non toxic weight or feeder is used to anchor the end rig to the bottom of the lake or river and we will look at each method individually in depth under their own headings.
